Bridging Nations for Better Healthcare: My Journey as a FORTE Delegate at UEMS, by Doria Juric
Hello! For those who haven’t met me yet, I’m Doria, an orthopedic surgery resident based in Switzerland. Today, I’m thrilled to share my experiences and insights as a FORTE Delegate at the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS). Our healthcare systems are grappling with numerous global challenges, and no single country can claim all the solutions. This is why organizations like UEMS and FORTE, and their collaboration, are vital. By sharing knowledge, expertise, and resources, we can collectively enhance medical care worldwide. It is truly a privilege for me to act as a bridge between FORTE and UEMS, working towards this shared goal.
Understanding UEMS
Before diving into the collaboration between FORTE and UEMS, it’s essential to understand what UEMS stands for. The UEMS, established in 1958, is the oldest medical organization in Europe, representing medical specialties across the continent. With 37 member countries and 43 specialist sections, UEMS unites about 1.6 million medical specialists. Its activities include developing training requirements, organizing European exams, and participating in EU projects and events. However, the most valuable asset of UEMS is the dedicated individuals who passionately contribute to its projects.
The Role of a FORTE Delegate
As a FORTE delegate at UEMS, I bridge the gap between trainees and established specialists, ensuring that the voices of the young generation of orthopedic trainees across Europe are heard and considered. My key responsibilities include strengthening bonds with UEMS and its member nations, promoting high standards of education, advocating for the EBOT exam, and engaging in diverse discussions. These efforts aim to create a brighter future for young orthopedic and trauma surgeons and residents.
Key Aspects of the FORTE Delegate Role
The role of a FORTE delegate encompasses several crucial aspects:
– Representation: Acting as the voice of trainees, I advocate for their interests and concerns during discussions and decision-making processes. This ensures that trainee perspectives are integral to policy and standard development.
– Collaboration: Working closely with experienced orthopedic surgeons and other medical specialists, I participate in joint committees and working groups focused on education, training, and clinical practice standards. This collaborative environment fosters mutual goals between FORTE and UEMS.
– Communication: As a liaison between FORTE members and UEMS, I facilitate the exchange of information and ideas, keeping trainees informed about activities, decisions, and opportunities, thus promoting transparency.
– Standard Setting and Quality Assurance: Contributing to the development and revision of training curricula, guidelines, and protocols ensures that training standards meet the evolving needs of orthopedic practice and align with the highest quality benchmarks.
– Education and Professional Development: I help organize and participate in educational events, workshops, and conferences, supporting initiatives that provide trainees with opportunities for professional growth and skill enhancement. This promotes continuous learning and keeps us updated with the latest advancements in orthopedic surgery.
– Research and Innovation: Encouraging and supporting research initiatives involving trainees is another critical aspect of my role. This comprehensive involvement not only supports the professional development of trainees but also significantly advances orthopedic education and practice across Europe.
Encouragement to Join FORTE
The comprehensive role of a FORTE delegate significantly contributes to the advancement of orthopedic education and practice across Europe. I would like to motivate others to join FORTE and take on such roles, as it offers immense opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I’d like to leave you with a thought that encapsulates our mission and passion: “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much more.” Let’s continue working together to create a future with the best education for young orthopedic and trauma residents. Ultimately, this collaborative effort will benefit our patients across Europe and beyond.
Thank you for your attention,
Doria Juric, MD
