FORTE is proud to contribute to the Swiss Orthopaedics Annual Congress with a dedicated session focused on one of the most relevant topics for trainees and young specialists: career development in orthopaedics.
This session aims to provide practical insights, strategic guidance, and forward-looking perspectives to support young orthopaedic surgeons in shaping a successful and sustainable career pathway.
The programme is structured around three key pillars:
1. Navigating the Swiss System & Career Logistics
The transition from training to independent practice is often complex, particularly within the Swiss healthcare system, where career progression pathways can be unclear and a source of uncertainty.
- The Habilitation and Beyond: Demystifying Academic Promotion in Switzerland
A structured overview of the Habilitation process, including requirements, timelines, and strategic considerations. This segment also explores the role of the Privatdozent (PD) title and its relevance across clinical and academic career paths, including progression towards professorship. - Building Your Practice: From FMH Specialist Title to Patient Referrals
A practical roadmap for the post-specialisation phase, covering the process of obtaining the FMH specialist title, career opportunities within hospitals or private practice, and the importance of professional visibility. Particular focus will be given to networking strategies, the role of the Ärzteverzeichnis, and building strong referral pathways.
2. Modern Surgical & Professional Skills
In today’s rapidly evolving medical landscape, technical expertise alone is no longer sufficient. A future-proof orthopaedic career requires continuous development of both surgical and non-technical skills.
- The Digital Orthopaedic Surgeon: Leveraging Technology, AI, and Robotics
This topic explores the importance of developing a digital mindset, including understanding the role of artificial intelligence in diagnostics and pre-operative planning, as well as strategies for integrating emerging technologies into clinical practice. - Leadership and Communication: From the OR Team to the Boardroom
Essential non-technical competencies will be discussed, including leadership in the operating room, communication with patients and families, and shared decision-making. The session will also highlight how to position oneself for leadership roles within departments and professional organisations.
3. Entrepreneurship & Personal Branding
An increasing number of young surgeons are exploring opportunities beyond traditional career paths, including private practice, innovation, and leadership at national and international levels.
- Beyond the Scalpel: Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Industry Collaboration
This segment introduces opportunities and challenges related to collaboration with industry, including ethical considerations, development of innovative ideas, and navigation of the Swiss medtech landscape. It also explores the pathway from clinical need to innovation and potential start-up development. - Crafting Your Professional Identity: From Publications to Public Engagement
Focuses on building a strong professional profile through strategic publishing, active participation in conferences, and responsible use of platforms such as LinkedIn and ResearchGate. Emphasis will be placed on developing a credible and impactful presence within the orthopaedic community.
